    Summary

    For postmenopausal osteoporosis, flexion exercises led to significantly more vertebral fractures than extension exercises. Extension or isometric exercises are recommended for managing spinal osteoporosis in women.

    Background:

    • Postmenopausal osteoporosis is a significant health concern, increasing fracture risk.
    • Back pain is a common symptom associated with spinal osteoporosis.
    • Exercise therapy is a key component in managing osteoporosis, but exercise type may influence outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the efficacy of different exercise regimens in preventing further vertebral fractures in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
    • To determine if flexion or extension exercises impact fracture incidence differently.

    Main Methods:

    • A cohort of 59 women with postmenopausal spinal osteoporosis and back pain were assigned to four groups: extension exercises (E), flexion exercises (F), combined (E+F) exercises, or no exercises (N).

    • Extension or isometric exercises appear to be safer and more appropriate for managing spinal osteoporosis in this population.
    • Exercise selection is critical for preventing further skeletal damage in women with postmenopausal osteoporosis.
