    Summary

    Patients with atopic dermatitis show significantly reduced natural killer (NK) cell activity. This finding suggests a potential role for NK cells in the immune response to atopic dermatitis.

    Background:

    • Atopic dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin condition.
    • The role of innate immune cells, such as natural killer (NK) cells, in atopic dermatitis pathogenesis is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate and quantify natural killer (NK)-cell activity in patients with atopic dermatitis.
    • To compare NK-cell activity in atopic dermatitis patients with that of age-matched healthy controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood samples were collected from twenty patients diagnosed with atopic dermatitis.
    • A chromium-release assay utilizing the K562 human leukemia cell line (labeled with 51Cr) as target cells was employed to measure NK-cell activity.
    • A control group of thirteen age-matched non-atopic individuals was included for comparison.

    Main Results:

    • A statistically significant reduction in NK-cell activity was observed in the peripheral blood of patients with atopic dermatitis compared to controls.
    • The data indicates a marked impairment of NK-cell cytotoxic function in individuals affected by atopic dermatitis.

    Conclusions:

    • Natural killer (NK)-cell activity is significantly diminished in patients suffering from atopic dermatitis.
    • These findings suggest that impaired NK-cell function may contribute to the immune dysregulation observed in atopic dermatitis.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the therapeutic potential of modulating NK-cell activity in atopic dermatitis management.
