    Summary

    Dexamethasone significantly increases plasma free dopamine levels in humans. This finding may explain how corticosteroids affect prolactin, psychiatric conditions, and psychosis in depressed patients.

    Background:

    • Unconjugated plasma dopamine (DA) is typically undetectable or present in minimal amounts in humans.
    • Corticosteroids are known to influence various physiological and psychological processes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of dexamethasone on plasma free dopamine levels.
    • To explore potential mechanisms linking corticosteroid action to hormonal and psychiatric effects.

    Main Methods:

    • Twelve healthy, medication-free volunteers participated in the study.
    • A single 1 mg dose of dexamethasone was administered.
    • Plasma free dopamine levels were measured before and after dexamethasone administration at different times of the day.
