    Summary

    Contact thermography is a noninvasive method for breast cancer risk assessment. Classifying thermograms as "normal" or "abnormal" improves agreement between different readers compared to using a five-class system.

    Background:

    • Contact thermography is proposed as a rapid, noninvasive tool for breast cancer risk evaluation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effectiveness of different interpretation criteria for contact thermography in breast cancer risk assessment.
    • To determine if a simplified classification system improves interrater reliability.

    • Two sets of contact thermograms from 34 patients with benign breast disease were analyzed.
    • Thermograms were interpreted by two independent reading services using different classification criteria.

    • A five-class system (class I-V) resulted in lower agreement between the reading services.
