    Summary

Contrast angiography is safe for patients with kidney issues when proper hydration and diuretics are used. This study found no increased risk of renal dysfunction following the procedure with these precautions.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiovascular Disease
    • Nephrology
    • Radiology

    Background:

    • Contrast dye is crucial for cardiovascular disease evaluation.
    • Renal complications can deter arteriogram use in patients with impaired kidney function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To assess the incidence of renal dysfunction in patients undergoing angiography.
    • To determine the safety of contrast angiography in patients with compromised renal function.

    Main Methods:

    • 150 patients received standard contrast angiography.
    • Patients were pre-hydrated and post-hydrated with intravenous fluids.
    • Diuretics were administered to patients with elevated BUN/creatinine levels.

    Main Results:

    • No episodes of compromised renal or cardiopulmonary dysfunction occurred.
    • No patient experienced an increase in BUN or creatinine levels.
    • No evidence of acute tubular necrosis was found.

    Conclusions:

    • Contrast angiography is a safe procedure, even for patients with compromised renal function.
    • Appropriate pre-hydration, post-hydration, and diuretic measures ensure safety.
    • The study supports the use of angiography in at-risk patient populations with proper management.
