[Contrast medium elimination by hemodialysis].

H G Baars, J Schabel, M Weiss

    Zeitschrift Fur Urologie Und Nephrologie
    |August 1, 1984

    Summary

This study examined contrast medium elimination in patients with no kidney function undergoing hemodialysis. Hemodialysis effectively removed the contrast medium, but its efficiency decreased as plasma levels dropped.

    Area of Science:

    • Nephrology
    • Radiology
    • Pharmacokinetics

    Context:

    • Assessing contrast medium elimination in patients with end-stage renal disease.
    • Evaluating the efficacy of hemodialysis for removing iodinated contrast agents.
    • Investigating the pharmacokinetic profile of diatrizoic acid in anuric patients.

    Purpose:

    • To quantify the elimination rate of 125I-labelled diatrizoic acid in patients with no kidney function undergoing hemodialysis.
    • To analyze the blood and dialysate concentrations of contrast medium over time.
    • To determine the relationship between contrast medium plasma levels and hemodialysis efficacy.

    Summary:

    • Six patients with no apparent kidney function received 125I-labelled diatrizoic acid to assess contrast medium elimination.
    • Blood and dialysate concentrations showed a biexponential fall, analyzed using a two-compartment model.
    • Hemodialysis achieved significant elimination (up to 80.7%) over 10 hours, though efficacy decreased with lower plasma levels.

    Impact:

    • Provides kinetic data on contrast medium removal in anuric patients via hemodialysis.
    • Highlights the effectiveness of prolonged hemodialysis for contrast agent clearance.
    • Suggests potential limitations in contrast medium removal efficiency as plasma concentrations decrease during dialysis.
