    Summary

    Elective open-heart surgery temporarily impairs natural killer (NK) cell activity in patients with heart disease. This immune cell function recovers within two weeks post-surgery.

    • Natural killer (NK) cells are crucial for innate immunity.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of elective open-heart surgery on peripheral blood NK cell activity.
    • To assess the temporal changes in NK cell function following cardiopulmonary bypass.

    Main Methods:

    • Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were isolated from 12 heart disease patients and healthy volunteers.
    • NK cell activity was measured using a 3H-thymidine-labelled K562 target cell assay.
    • Blood samples were collected preoperatively and at 2, 7, and 14 days postoperatively.

    • NK cell activity was significantly depressed (P < 0.01) for 2 days after open-heart surgery.
    • No significant changes in NK cell activity were observed in control samples.
