    Summary

    This study found that the left cerebral hemisphere in individuals with chronic schizophrenia has a decreased relative density compared to normal controls. This suggests potential brain structural differences in schizophrenia.

    Background:

    • Schizophrenia is a complex mental disorder with suspected neurobiological underpinnings.
    • Cerebral tissue density variations may offer insights into brain structure abnormalities in psychiatric conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate regional differences in mean cerebral tissue density between chronic schizophrenics and healthy controls.
    • To determine if there are lateralized density patterns in the brain hemispheres specific to schizophrenia.

    Main Methods:

    • Regional mean cerebral tissue density was measured in 50 individuals with chronic schizophrenia and 24 normal controls.
    • Comparisons were made between corresponding left and right hemispheric regions for both groups.

    Main Results:

    • In normal controls, 11 out of 12 regional comparisons showed significantly greater left than right hemispheric density.
    • In schizophrenic patients, only 6 out of 12 regional comparisons showed significantly greater left than right hemispheric density.
    • This indicates an overall decreased relative density of the left cerebral hemisphere in schizophrenia.

    Conclusions:

    • The findings suggest a pattern of reduced left cerebral hemisphere density in chronic schizophrenia.
    • These cerebral density differences may represent a neuroanatomical marker associated with schizophrenia.
    • Further research is warranted to explore the implications of these structural findings.
