M Endo, S Haruki, K Shin

    Biological Psychiatry

    Summary

A severe pyometra, a uterine infection, may trigger anorexia nervosa in some patients. Treatment involving alimentation and surgery improved physical symptoms but not all hormonal functions.

    Area of Science:

    • Medical Science
    • Endocrinology
    • Gastroenterology

    Background:

    • Anorexia nervosa is a complex eating disorder with significant physiological consequences.
    • Pyometra, a severe uterine infection, can lead to systemic illness.

    Observation:

    • A patient presented with anorexia nervosa, which appeared to be precipitated by a concurrent severe pyometra.
    • The co-occurrence of these conditions suggests a potential etiological link.

    Findings:

    • Surgical intervention for pyometra combined with compulsory alimentation led to weight gain.
    • Reversal of dilated cerebral sulci and hypothyroidism was observed post-treatment.
    • Persistent hypothalamo-pituitary dysfunction was noted despite clinical improvements.

    Implications:

    • This case highlights a potential, previously unrecognized trigger for anorexia nervosa.
    • Early diagnosis and integrated treatment of both pyometra and anorexia nervosa are crucial.
    • Further research is needed to understand the neuroendocrine pathways linking infection and eating disorders.
