Failure of mexiletine to relieve severe pruritus

Mexiletine, an antiarrhythmic drug with pharmacological properties similar to lidocaine, was tested for antipruritic effect in 4 patients with severe pruritus. Although the plasma levels were within the therapeutic range for antiarrhythmic effects, a consistent relief of pruritus could not be found.
