Plasma exchange in radiculopolyneuropathies.

G Marconi, S Bobbi, A Pizzi

The International Journal of Artificial Organs
    |September 1, 1984

    Summary

Plasma Exchange therapy shows significant effectiveness in treating acute Guillain-Barré Syndrome and chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuritis. While beneficial for these conditions, its application requires careful patient selection due to cost and potential side effects.

    Area of Science:

    • Neurology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Polyradiculoneuritis encompasses Guillain-Barré Syndrome (GBS) and its chronic variants.
    • Plasma Exchange (P.E.) is a therapeutic apheresis technique used for various neurological conditions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of Plasma Exchange therapy in patients with acute Guillain-Barré Syndrome and chronic polyradiculoneuritis.
    • To assess treatment outcomes in different forms of polyradiculoneuritis.

    Main Methods:

    • The study included 24 patients: 11 with typical GBS, 10 with chronic progressive polyradiculoneuritis, and 3 with chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuritis.
    • GBS patients received four P.E. sessions over 1-2 days; chronic cases underwent six sessions over 1-3 days.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • Nine out of eleven GBS patients experienced rapid and complete recovery within weeks.
    • Two of three chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuritis patients achieved complete cure within months.
    • No significant improvement was observed in chronic progressive polyradiculoneuritis patients.

    Conclusions:

    • Plasma Exchange is effective for acute GBS and chronic relapsing polyradiculoneuritis.
    • Treatment outcomes suggest P.E. is a valuable therapeutic option for specific polyradiculoneuritis subtypes.
    • Careful patient selection is recommended due to cost and potential adverse effects, especially in cases with respiratory compromise.
