    Background:

    • Diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) is a key metabolic process.
    • Protein malnutrition can affect energy expenditure.
    • The role of thyroid hormones in DIT under malnutrition is not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the necessity of thyroid hormones for diet-induced thermogenesis (DIT) in protein-malnourished rats.
    • To elucidate the contribution of thyroid hormones to thermogenesis and sympathetic regulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Male Sprague-Dawley rats were fed diets with normal (22%) or low (8%) protein content for 8 weeks.
    • Rats were either thyroidectomized (Tx) or surgically intact, with some receiving thyroxine (T4) replacement.
    • Oxygen consumption, interscapular brown adipose tissue (IBAT) weight, and response to norepinephrine were measured.

    Main Results:

    • Protein-malnourished rats showed increased resting and minimal oxygen consumption.
    • Thyroidectomy decreased oxygen consumption, which was normalized by T4 replacement.
    • The thermogenic response to norepinephrine was impaired by thyroidectomy and restored with T4.

    Conclusions:

    • Thyroid hormones are required for the increased metabolic rate observed in protein-malnourished rats.
    • Thyroid hormones are essential for the sympathetic-dependent component of DIT and overall thermogenesis in this model.
