W Ickes, A Layden, R D Barnes

    Journal of Personality

    Summary

Increased objective self-awareness enhances individuation, leading to a more distinct self-concept. This effect is pronounced in low self-monitoring individuals, while high self-monitoring subjects remain largely unaffected by changes in self-awareness.

    Area of Science:

    • Psychology
    • Social Psychology
    • Cognitive Psychology

    Background:

    • Self-awareness is a fundamental aspect of human experience.
    • Two key states of self-awareness are objective and subjective.
    • Individuation and deindividuation describe distinct self-perceptions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the relationship between objective/subjective self-awareness and individuation/deindividuation.
    • To determine if phenomenal experiences align with these psychological states.
    • To test the hypothesis linking self-awareness states to self-conception dimensions.

    Main Methods:

    • Experiment involving 40 participants (20 male, 20 female) in matched pairs.
    • Manipulation of self-awareness levels (high vs. low).

    Related Experiment Videos

  • Administration of the 'Who Am I' questionnaire and coding of responses on 21 self-conception dimensions.
  • Main Results:

    • Objective self-awareness significantly increased individuation in self-conception.
    • Objective self-awareness decreased deindividuation responses.
    • The effect of self-awareness was stronger for low self-monitoring individuals.

    Conclusions:

    • Objective self-awareness promotes a more individuated sense of self.
    • High self-monitoring individuals' self-perceptions are less influenced by situational self-awareness.
    • The study clarifies the interplay between self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-conception.
