    Summary

Guided pursuit contrast sensitivity (GP-CS) measures how well the eye can detect moving gratings when guided by a light spot. GP-CS closely matches stationary pattern recognition sensitivity at low speeds, unlike flicker sensitivity.

    Area of Science:

    • Visual neuroscience
    • Human psychophysics

    Background:

    • Contrast sensitivity is crucial for visual perception.
    • Understanding how eye movements influence visual processing is key.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To define and measure guided pursuit contrast sensitivity (GP-CS).
    • To compare GP-CS with flicker (F-CS) and pattern recognition (PR-CS) sensitivity.
    • To investigate the role of the sustained visual system in motion perception during pursuit.

    Main Methods:

    • Measured GP-CS for various spatial frequencies (0.75-12 c/deg) and drift velocities (1-16 Hz).
    • Compared GP-CS with PR-CS for stationary gratings and F-CS.
    • Analyzed GP contrast sensitivity functions (GP-CSFs) against spatial frequency.

    Main Results:

    • GP-CS closely matched PR-CS (stationary) up to ~5 degrees/s drift velocity.
    • F-CS showed significant deviations from PR-CS across spatial frequencies.
    • GP-CSFs resembled PR-CSFs at 0 Hz, suggesting sustained system involvement.

    Conclusions:

    • The sustained visual system likely mediates motion perception during smooth pursuit.
    • Pattern vision plays a role in guided pursuit eye movements.
    • GP-CS provides a novel measure of visual performance during active eye tracking.
