    Area of Science:

    • Endocrinology
    • Neurosurgery
    • Pathology

    Background:

    • Pituitary oncocytomas, initially reported by Kovacs and Horvath, and Landolt and Oswald, are increasingly recognized with advancements in diagnostic techniques.
    • Previous underdiagnosis may be attributed to the lack of detailed electron microscopic examination in earlier cases.

    Observation:

    • Case 1: A 66-year-old woman presented with a 6-year history of visual impairment, panhypopituitarism, and a pituitary tumor with suprasellar extension.
    • Case 2: A 50-year-old man experienced loss of libido, left exophthalmos, ptosis, visual impairment, panhypopituitarism, and a pituitary tumor with suprasellar extension and orbital invasion.

    Findings:

    • Both patients underwent surgical tumor removal and irradiation.
    • Histopathological examination revealed poorly granulated adenomas with weak acid dye affinity, characteristic of pituitary oncocytoma.

    Implications:

    • Accurate diagnosis of pituitary oncocytoma relies on comprehensive clinicopathological assessment, including electron microscopy.
    • Timely surgical intervention and radiotherapy are crucial for managing pituitary oncocytomas with significant mass effect and endocrine dysfunction.
