Patients with squamous cell carcinoma face a significantly elevated risk of developing new cancers, particularly in the upper aerodigestive tract. This study highlights the high incidence of multiple primary tumors in these individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Oncology
    • Cancer Research

    Background:

    • Multiple squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs) are a recognized clinical challenge.
    • Patients with SCCs have a substantially increased risk of developing new primary cancers.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To quantify the risk and incidence of second primary cancers in patients initially diagnosed with squamous carcinoma of the upper digestive tract.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 6,203 cases of primary upper digestive tract squamous carcinoma.
    • Tracking of subsequent primary malignancies, including synchronous and metachronous tumors.

    Main Results:

    • 10.4% of patients (648/6,203) developed two or more independent tumors.
    • A total of 761 additional malignancies were observed across the cohort.

    Related Experiment Videos

  • The observed to expected ratio for developing a second primary cancer in the upper aerodigestive tract was 2.48 (2.32 for males, 2.89 for females).
  • Conclusions:

    • Patients with upper digestive tract SCC have a high risk of developing subsequent primary cancers.
    • The upper aerodigestive tract is a common site for these secondary malignancies.
    • This underscores the need for vigilant long-term surveillance in SCC survivors.
