Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association
    |December 1, 1984

    Summary

Environmental factors, including human-inflicted trauma and cold winters, were the primary causes of mortality in West Indian manatees (Trichechus manatus). Natural diseases rarely caused death in the studied population.

    Area of Science:

    • Marine Mammal Science
    • Wildlife Pathology
    • Conservation Biology

    Background:

    • The West Indian manatee (Trichechus manatus) is a vulnerable marine mammal species facing various threats.
    • Understanding mortality factors is crucial for effective conservation strategies.

    Observation:

    • Necropsy and microscopic examinations were performed on 16 West Indian manatees.
    • The study aimed to determine the causes of death in this population.

    Findings:

    • Environmental factors were the leading cause of mortality in most manatees examined.
    • Human-inflicted trauma and adverse weather conditions (cold winters) were significant contributing factors.
    • Natural disease processes were identified as the cause of death in only one individual.
    • The cause of death remained undetermined in three manatees.

    Implications:

    • Findings highlight the significant impact of anthropogenic and environmental stressors on manatee populations.
    • Conservation efforts should prioritize mitigating human-related threats and addressing climate change impacts.
    • Further research may be needed to understand undetermined mortality cases.
