    Background:

    • Understanding genetic parameters for reproductive traits is crucial for improving swine breeding programs.
    • Testis size is a key indicator of reproductive potential in boars.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the heritability and genetic correlations of in situ and excised testis traits in Duroc and Yorkshire boars.
    • To assess the relationship between testis measurements and growth performance traits.

    Main Methods:

    • Collected body weights, testis length, and width from 1,245 Duroc and 527 Yorkshire boars at 140 and 168 days.
    • Analyzed relationships between in situ measures and excised testis traits from 432 castrated boars.
    • Estimated heritabilities and genetic correlations for various testis and growth traits.

    Main Results:

    • Heritabilities for in situ testis measurements ranged from .16 to .36.
    • Favorable negative genetic relationships were observed between in situ testis measures and age to 104 kg and backfat.

    • In situ testis measurements are reliable predictors of sperm production in boars.
    • Selection for increased testis size is unlikely to be antagonistic to selection for improved growth performance traits in swine.
