    Background:

    • Understanding age-related changes in gastrointestinal motility is crucial for diagnosing and managing digestive disorders.
    • Previous research has yielded mixed results regarding the influence of age on colonic function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effects of a standardized meal on sigmoid, rectosigmoid, and rectal motility in healthy elderly and young adults.
    • To determine if age or gender influences gastrointestinal motility patterns following a meal.

    Main Methods:

    • Utilized intraluminal pressure transducers to record motility in three segments of the lower colon (sigmoid, rectosigmoid, rectum).
    • Compared motility parameters (percentage activity, surface area under contraction curves) in 18 elderly and 18 young adults before, during, and after a 900-kcal meal.

    Main Results:

    • A 900-kcal meal significantly increased colonic motility in both age groups (P < 0.02).
    • No significant differences in motility were observed between elderly and young adults (P > 0.1).
    • Motility returned to baseline fasting levels immediately after meal consumption in all participants.
