    Summary

    The cause of nonarteritic anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (NAION) is often unknown. This study suggests that optic nerve anatomy, specifically a lack of physiologic cup, may be a risk factor for NAION.

    Background:

    • The etiology of anterior ischemic optic neuropathy (AION), particularly the nonarteritic form (NAION), remains largely undetermined.
    • Previous clinical, pathological, and experimental studies have failed to establish a definitive cause for NAION.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the optic disc morphology in patients with acute nonarteritic AION.
    • To explore potential links between optic nerve anatomy and the development of NAION.

    Main Methods:

    • A study was conducted on 51 patients diagnosed with acute nonarteritic AION.
    • The optic disc appearance was examined in both the affected eye and the unaffected fellow eye of each patient.

    Main Results:

    • A significantly higher prevalence of optic discs lacking a physiologic cup was observed in the study cohort (both involved and fellow eyes) compared to general population data.
