Functional limitation of motion of the first metatarsophalangeal joint

The primary conditions characterized by functional limitation of motion of the first metatarsal are hallux limitus and hallux rigidus. The authors discuss the etiology, clinical manifestations, biomechanical compensatory mechanisms, and radiographic findings. Because only temporary relief is provided by conservative treatment, the various surgical approaches to treatment are discussed.
