A Appels, P Mulder

    Journal of Human Stress
    |January 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Vital exhaustion and depression (VED) significantly increases the risk of imminent myocardial infarction. This study found over four times higher prevalence of heart attack symptoms in exhausted and depressed individuals.

    Area of Science:

    • Cardiology
    • Psychology
    • Preventive Medicine

    Background:

    • Unstable angina and fatigue are recognized premonitory symptoms of myocardial infarction.
    • These symptoms may indicate a psychological state known as vital exhaustion and depression (VED).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the association between vital exhaustion and depression (VED) and the prevalence of imminent myocardial infarction.
    • To assess the risk of myocardial infarction in individuals exhibiting VED symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • A questionnaire measuring vital exhaustion and depression (VED) was administered to 3,571 males.
    • Participants underwent voluntary health check-ups.
    • Prevalence of imminent myocardial infarction was compared between individuals with and without VED.

    Main Results:

    • Imminent myocardial infarction was defined as unstable angina pectoris with electrocardiographic signs of ischemia.
    • The prevalence of imminent myocardial infarction was more than four times higher in individuals with vital exhaustion and depression (VED) compared to those not affected.
    • This highlights a significant link between psychological distress and cardiac events.

    Conclusions:

    • Vital exhaustion and depression (VED) are significant risk factors for imminent myocardial infarction.
    • Psychological well-being plays a crucial role in cardiovascular health.
    • Screening for VED may aid in identifying individuals at higher risk for myocardial infarction.
