    A new lupus activity criteria count accurately predicts active systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) disease. The criteria, based on 7 key variables, correctly identified active SLE in 100% of cases in a validation study.

    Background:

    • Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic autoimmune disease requiring accurate monitoring of disease activity.
    • Current methods for assessing SLE activity can be complex and time-consuming.
    • Objective and reliable criteria for lupus activity are needed to guide treatment decisions.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To develop and validate a simple, objective criteria count for assessing systemic lupus erythematosus disease activity.
    • To identify key clinical and laboratory variables associated with active SLE.
    • To establish a predictive tool for identifying patients with active lupus.

    Main Methods:

    • Prospective study involving 50 patients with SLE.
    • Evaluation of clinical and laboratory assessments by three independent rheumatologists.
    • Identification and combination of 7 highly associated variables into a lupus activity criteria count.
    • Validation of the criteria count using a second sample of 50 assessments.

    Main Results:

    • Of 50 initial assessments, 24 were active, 12 possibly active, and 14 inactive.
    • Analysis of 38 clearly active or inactive assessments identified key variables.
    • The developed lupus activity criteria count correctly predicted active disease in 100% of cases when any 2 criteria were present.
    • The criteria count demonstrated validity in a second sample of 50 assessments.

    Conclusions:

    • A novel lupus activity criteria count, comprising 7 key variables, is a highly accurate predictor of active systemic lupus erythematosus.
    • This criteria count offers a simplified and effective method for assessing SLE disease activity.
    • The validated criteria have the potential to improve clinical management and patient outcomes in SLE.
