    Summary

Calcinosis circumscripta, a condition causing calcified masses, was diagnosed in two rhesus monkeys. These masses recurred shortly after surgical removal, indicating a challenging clinical presentation.

    Area of Science:

    • Veterinary Pathology
    • Primate Medicine
    • Dermatology

    Background:

    • Calcinosis circumscripta is a rare condition characterized by the deposition of calcium salts.
    • Subcutaneous nodules are the typical presentation, often affecting extremities.

    Observation:

    • Two female rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) presented with firm, multilobular subcutaneous masses.
    • The masses were surgically excised but demonstrated recurrence within three months.

    Findings:

    • Histological examination revealed multiple loculi of calcified material.
    • These calcified deposits were surrounded by inflammatory cells and fibrous tissue.
    • A definitive diagnosis of calcinosis circumscripta was established.

    Implications:

    • The findings highlight the potential for recurrence of calcinosis circumscripta in non-human primates following surgical intervention.
    • The gross and histological features observed are consistent with previously reported cases across various species.
    • This case report contributes to the understanding of calcinosis circumscripta in rhesus monkeys, informing veterinary diagnostic and treatment strategies.
