    Summary

    Salicylate treatment reduced platelet hyperaggregability in migraine patients but did not improve clinical symptoms. This study falsifies the hypothesis that migraine is a platelet aggregation disorder.

    Background:

    • Migraine is a complex neurological disorder.
    • Platelet hyperaggregability has been implicated in migraine pathophysiology.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the effect of salicylate on platelet aggregability in migraine patients.
    • To determine if reducing platelet aggregation alleviates migraine symptoms.

    Main Methods:

    • 46 migraine patients and 4 nonmigrainous vascular headache patients received 250 mg salicylate daily for 2 months.
    • Platelet aggregability was measured before and during treatment.
    • 10 healthy controls were included for comparison.

    Main Results:

    • Platelet hyperaggregability was confirmed in migraine patients.
    • Salicylate treatment significantly reduced platelet aggregability.
    • No significant clinical improvement in migraine symptoms was observed.

    Conclusions:

    • Migraine is not solely a platelet aggregation disorder.
    • While salicylate affects platelet function, it does not offer a clinical benefit for migraine.
    • Further research is needed to understand the underlying mechanisms of migraine.
