    Background:

    • Phenylephrine is a sympathomimetic agent used in ophthalmology.
    • Its effects on accommodation and interaction with cycloplegics require further elucidation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the dose-dependent effect of phenylephrine eye drops on accommodation in healthy adults.
    • To evaluate the impact of phenylephrine on the cycloplegic effect of atropine in children.

    Main Methods:

    • Double-blind study in 10 healthy volunteers measuring accommodation before and after phenylephrine instillation (0.1%, 1.0%, 10%).
    • Randomized trial in 20 children (3-6 years) assessing atropine's cycloplegic effect with or without phenylephrine.

    Main Results:

    • Accommodation decreased exponentially with increasing phenylephrine concentration.
    • A 10% phenylephrine drop reduced accommodation by an average of 3 dioptres.
    • Phenylephrine did not significantly alter atropine's cycloplegic effect in children, though a slight, non-significant hypermetropic shift was observed in some.

    Conclusions:

    • Phenylephrine eye drops induce a concentration-dependent decrease in accommodation.
    • Phenylephrine does not significantly potentiate the cycloplegic effect of atropine in young children.
