    Summary

Rats with hippocampal lesions struggle with spatial memory tasks, supporting the cognitive map theory over working memory theory for hippocampal function.

    Area of Science:

    • Neuroscience
    • Cognitive Psychology
    • Animal Behavior

    Background:

    • The hippocampus is crucial for spatial navigation and memory.
    • Two prominent theories, cognitive map and working memory, attempt to explain hippocampal function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare the predictive power of cognitive map and working memory theories.
    • To investigate the effects of dorsal hippocampal lesions on spatial memory in rats.

    Main Methods:

    • Rats with dorsal hippocampal lesions were compared to control rats.
    • Performance was assessed using spatial alternation, elevated 8-arm radial maze, and two versions of a 16-arm enclosed radial maze (cued and uncued).

    Main Results:

    • Lesioned rats learned spatial alternation normally but were impaired in the 8-arm maze.
    • In the 16-arm maze, lesioned rats showed deficits in both cued and uncued versions, indicating impaired reference and working memory.
    • Evaluators noted lesioned rats used fewer mapping and more orientation strategies.

    Conclusions:

    • Findings support the cognitive map hypothesis of hippocampal function.
    • Results are incompatible with the working memory hypothesis of hippocampal function.
    • Dorsal hippocampal lesions impair the ability to form cognitive maps essential for spatial navigation.
