    Summary

Reoperation for recurrent bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer) is rarely recommended. While nine patients underwent a second surgery, only two remain tumor-free, suggesting limited benefit except in highly selective cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Thoracic Surgery
    • Surgical Oncology
    • Pulmonology

    Background:

    • Bronchogenic carcinoma (lung cancer) can recur after initial surgical treatment.
    • The efficacy of reoperation for recurrent lung cancer is not well-established.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the outcomes of patients undergoing a second operation for recurrent bronchogenic carcinoma.
    • To determine the feasibility and success rate of reoperation in selected lung cancer cases.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective analysis of 869 patients primarily operated on for bronchogenic carcinoma.
    • Identification of nine patients who underwent a second operation for tumor recurrence.
    • Detailed review of surgical procedures, intervals between operations, and patient outcomes.

    Main Results:

    • The median interval between the first and second operation was 16 months.
    • Surgical procedures for recurrence varied, including ipsilateral and contralateral resections.
    • Out of nine patients, four are alive, but only two are tumor-free after short-term follow-up.

    Conclusions:

    • Reoperation for recurrent bronchogenic carcinoma shows limited success.
    • The study does not support routine reoperation for lung cancer recurrence.
    • Reoperation should be considered only in very rare, carefully selected individual cases.
