Optical urethrotomy for urethral strictures--a preliminary report.

K H Tung, E C Tan, K T Foo

Annals of the Academy of Medicine, Singapore
    |October 1, 1984
    PubMed
    Summary

Optical urethrotomy effectively treated urethral strictures in 58% of patients. Recurrent stenosis can be managed with repeat procedures, reserving urethroplasty for resistant cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Urology
    • Surgical Innovation

    Background:

    • Urethral strictures pose a significant clinical challenge.
    • Etiologies include post-prostatectomy, trauma, and inflammation.
    • Idiopathic cases also occur.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of optical urethrotomy for managing urethral strictures.
    • To assess outcomes and recurrence rates following the procedure.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 24 patients with urethral strictures.
    • Management involved optical urethrotomy.
    • Patient outcomes and recurrence were monitored.

    Main Results:

    • 58% of patients achieved satisfactory outcomes with optical urethrotomy.
    • A high rate of recurrent stenosis was observed.
    • Repeat visual urethrotomy was effective for managing recurrences with low morbidity.

    Conclusions:

    • Optical urethrotomy is a viable treatment option for select urethral strictures.
    • Recurrent strictures can often be managed conservatively with repeat procedures.
    • Urethroplasty remains an option for refractory cases.
