    This study shows a broad-spectrum sunscreen effectively protected against UV radiation in patients with polymorphous light eruption (PMLE). Sunscreen prevented skin changes, highlighting its protective benefits for PMLE.

    Background:

    • Polymorphous light eruption (PMLE) is a common photodermatosis.
    • Patients with PMLE exhibit abnormal skin reactions to ultraviolet (UV) radiation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of a broad-spectrum sunscreen in preventing UV-induced skin reactions in PMLE patients.
    • To assess the protective capabilities of a non-PABA, non-benzophenone sunscreen formulation.

    Main Methods:

    • Eight patients diagnosed with PMLE participated in the study.
    • Experimental irradiation of protected and unprotected skin sites using a UVA-SUN 2000 lamp.
    • Clinical and histological examination of skin responses to UV exposure.

    Main Results:

    • Unprotected skin sites showed significant morphological and histological changes.
    • Sunscreen-protected sites exhibited no clinical or microscopic evidence of UV-induced damage.
    • Several PMLE patients demonstrated low minimal erythema dose (MED) values for both UVA and UVB.

    Conclusions:

    • The tested broad-spectrum sunscreen provides effective photoprotection in patients with PMLE.
    • Sunscreen application can prevent the characteristic skin lesions associated with PMLE.
    • Findings support the use of broad-spectrum sunscreens for managing PMLE.
