    Summary

    Ethanol withdrawal did not cause hypertension in rats. Instead, rats showed decreased blood pressure and heart rate, indicating hypotension and bradycardia during withdrawal.

    Background:

    • Hypertension is often considered a clinical sign of ethanol withdrawal.
    • Previous studies suggested hypertension as a general consequence of ethanol withdrawal.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate whether hypertension is a general consequence of ethanol withdrawal.
    • To monitor blood pressure and heart rate in conscious rats during ethanol withdrawal.

    Main Methods:

    • Sprague-Dawley rats were exposed to ethanol vapor or air for 3 weeks.
    • Blood pressure and heart rate were monitored in rats during ethanol withdrawal.
    • Indwelling abdominal aortic cannulas were used for blood pressure measurement.

    Main Results:

    • Rats exposed to ethanol showed a significant decrease in blood pressure and heart rate compared to controls.
    • A negative correlation was found between blood ethanol levels and systolic blood pressure after ethanol cessation.
    • Signs of hypotension and bradycardia were observed during ethanol withdrawal.

    Conclusions:

    • Hypertension is not a universal consequence of ethanol withdrawal.
    • Ethanol withdrawal in rats is associated with hypotension and bradycardia, not hypertension.
