    Background:

    • Duchenne muscular dystrophy (DMD) is a severe X-linked recessive disorder.
    • The exact mechanisms driving muscle cell destruction in DMD are not fully understood.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the role of immune cells in the pathogenesis of Duchenne muscular dystrophy.
    • To examine the interaction between lymphocytes and muscle cells in affected individuals.

    Main Methods:

    • Electron microscopy was used to examine muscle tissue.
    • Samples were obtained from two fetuses at risk for DMD and five affected boys.

    Main Results:

    • Numerous activated lymphocytes were observed within muscle cells across all samples.
    • Lymphocytes showed various stages of invasion into muscle cells.
    • Observed interactions included cell-to-cell adherence and subsequent muscle cell destruction.

    Conclusions:

    • Cell-mediated cytolysis, involving activated lymphocytes, appears to be a significant factor in Duchenne muscular dystrophy pathogenesis.
    • These findings highlight the immune system's role in the progression of DMD.
