    Background:

    • Narcolepsy, a neurological disorder, affects sleep-wake cycles.

    Observation:

    • A 2 1/2-year-old Brahman bull displayed symptoms suggestive of narcolepsy.
    • Specific stimuli, including tilt table placement and electroejaculation, triggered episodes of apparent sleep and cataplexy.
    • Electrophysiologic recordings during episodes showed patterns consistent with rapid eye movement (REM) sleep.

    Findings:

    • Electroencephalogram (EEG) showed low-voltage, high-frequency activity.
    • Electromyogram (EMG) amplitude was reduced during episodes.
    • Electrooculogram (EOG) revealed rapid eye movements, characteristic of REM sleep.
    • Pharmacologic challenges indicated physostigmine salicylate potentiated episodes, while atropine sulfate and imipramine reduced or blocked them.

    Implications:

    • These findings support the diagnosis of narcolepsy in this Brahman bull.
    • The study highlights the utility of electrophysiologic and pharmacologic testing in diagnosing animal narcolepsy.
    • Understanding narcolepsy in livestock can inform breeding and management practices.
