    Summary

    Human semen contains androgen-binding components, but not the specific androgen-binding protein (ABP) found in Sertoli cells of other species. This indicates seminal fluid androgen binding doesn't reflect Sertoli-cell function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    Main Methods:

    • Dextran-coated charcoal method for detecting androgen-binding components.
    • Electrophoresis in polyacrylamide gels with tritiated dihydrotestosterone.
    • Analysis of pre- and postvasectomy semen samples.
    • Examination of split-ejaculate fractions and prostatic fluid.

    • Androgen-binding components were detected in human semen.

    • The androgen-binding components in human semen likely originate from prostate and seminal vesicle secretions, not Sertoli cells.
    • The presence and extent of androgen binding in human seminal fluid do not serve as a reliable indicator of Sertoli cell function.
