    Summary

    Pulsed Doppler ultrasound is more sensitive than 2D echocardiography for diagnosing ventricular septal defects (VSD) in children. This non-invasive technique accurately detects VSDs, even small ones, and remains effective with other heart conditions.

    Background:

    • Ventricular septal defects (VSD) are common congenital heart abnormalities requiring accurate diagnosis.
    • Two-dimensional echocardiography (2D-echo) and pulsed Doppler are non-invasive methods used for VSD assessment.
    • Comparative diagnostic accuracy of these modalities, particularly in pediatric populations, warrants further investigation.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate and compare the diagnostic accuracy of pulsed Doppler and 2D-echo in identifying VSD in children.
    • To determine the sensitivity of each imaging technique for detecting VSD, including smaller defects.

    Main Methods:

    • A study involving 32 children with suspected VSD.
    • Group I (17 children) had VSD confirmed by cardiac catheterization.
    • Group II (15 children) underwent non-invasive investigations only; both 2D-echo and pulsed Doppler were utilized.

    Conclusions:

    • Pulsed Doppler ultrasound is a more sensitive diagnostic tool for VSD in children than 2D-echo.
    • The diagnostic accuracy of pulsed Doppler is maintained in the presence of associated cardiac malformations and pulmonary hypertension (unless shunt is reversed).
    • Pulsed Doppler is particularly valuable for detecting small VSDs.
