    Summary

Disk-space infection is a soft tissue infection distinct from vertebral osteomyelitis. Treatment typically involves immobilization, with surgery reserved for resistant cases in children.

    Area of Science:

    • Orthopedics
    • Infectious Diseases
    • Pediatric Medicine

    Background:

    • Disk-space infection and vertebral osteomyelitis are distinct conditions.
    • Disk-space infection is a soft tissue infection, often caused by Staphylococcus aureus.

    Observation:

    • Reactive osteolytic and osteoblastic activity occurs in adjacent vertebral end-plates.
    • Immobilization (bed rest, corset, cast) often leads to satisfactory outcomes.

    Findings:

    • Needle or open biopsy may be required for diagnosis and treatment of resistant infections, particularly in older children.
    • Surgery and antibiotics are indicated for persistent symptoms, elevated sedimentation rates, and lack of radiologic improvement.

    Implications:

    • Treatment strategies for pediatric disk-space infections should not be extrapolated to adult patients.
    • Early diagnosis and appropriate management are crucial for favorable outcomes in pediatric spinal infections.
