    Background:

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate the interaction between sodium cholate and pulmonary surfactant.
    • To determine how varying concentrations of sodium cholate affect surfactant properties.

    Main Methods:

    • Bronchoalveolar lavage fluid was collected from adult rabbits.
    • Surface tension-area hysteresis loops were measured using a Wilhelmy surface tension balance.
    • Sodium cholate was added at concentrations of 1.5 x 10⁻⁵ mol/l and 5 x 10⁻⁵ mol/l.

    Main Results:

    • A biphasic response of hysteresis area was observed with increasing sodium cholate concentration.
    • Low sodium cholate concentration (1.5 x 10⁻⁵ mol/l) significantly increased hysteresis area (p < 0.05).
    • High sodium cholate concentration (5 x 10⁻⁵ mol/l) significantly decreased hysteresis area (p < 0.025).

    Conclusions:

    • Sodium cholate interacts with lung surfactant in a concentration-dependent manner.
    • These findings suggest a direct in vitro interaction between sodium cholate and pulmonary surfactant.
