    Summary

Inmate suicide rates in jails and prisons are alarmingly high, at least three times the national average. Research indicates that administrative and environmental factors, alongside personal characteristics, significantly contribute to these tragic deaths.

    Area of Science:

    • Forensic Psychiatry
    • Criminology
    • Public Health

    Background:

    • Suicide is the primary cause of death in correctional facilities, significantly exceeding national rates.
    • Despite its prevalence, inmate suicide receives insufficient professional psychiatric attention.
    • Existing research on the topic is limited and often methodologically flawed.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To review the existing literature on suicide in jails and prisons.
    • To identify trends in psychiatric morbidity among incarcerated populations.
    • To explore contributing factors to inmate suicides, including administrative, environmental, and personal variables.

    Main Methods:

    • A comprehensive review of relevant scientific literature was conducted.
    • Studies were assessed for methodological rigor.
    • Data on psychiatric morbidity and contributing factors to suicide were synthesized.

    Main Results:

    • Psychiatric morbidity within correctional facilities is on the rise.
    • Administrative and environmental factors are as significant as personal characteristics in contributing to inmate suicides.
    • A paucity of high-quality research exists in this critical area.

    Conclusions:

    • There is an urgent need for increased professional psychiatric focus on suicide prevention in jails and prisons.
    • Future research should address methodological limitations and explore the interplay of environmental and personal factors.
    • Practical applications derived from improved research are essential for mitigating inmate suicides.
