    Summary

    Epinephrine effectively reduced intraocular pressure (IOP) in patients with elevated IOP and chronic open-angle glaucoma. Response rates were similar, suggesting caution when using epinephrine to predict future vision loss.

    Background:

    • Elevated intraocular pressure (IOP) is a risk factor for glaucoma.
    • Epinephrine is a medication sometimes used to manage IOP.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the pressure-reducing effect of epinephrine in patients with elevated IOP and chronic open-angle glaucoma.
    • To compare the prevalence of responders between these two groups.

    Main Methods:

    • Epinephrine's effect on IOP was measured in 32 patients with elevated IOP.
    • The study also included 18 patients with untreated chronic open-angle glaucoma.

    Main Results:

    • A 53% response rate was observed in patients with elevated IOP.
    • A 56% response rate was observed in patients with open-angle glaucoma.
    • The similar response rates suggest epinephrine's efficacy is comparable in both groups.

    Conclusions:

    • The similar prevalence of responders indicates that epinephrine's efficacy in reducing IOP does not significantly differ between patients with general elevated IOP and those with chronic open-angle glaucoma.
    • Caution is advised when using epinephrine response as a sole predictor of future visual field loss in glaucoma patients.
