This study investigated hepatitis-A virus (HAV) in post-transfusion hepatitis. Results exclude HAV, supporting the existence of non-A, non-B hepatitis viruses.

    Area of Science:

    • Hepatology
    • Virology
    • Immunology

    Background:

    • Post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH) poses a significant clinical challenge.
    • Hepatitis-A virus (HAV) was investigated as a potential cause of PTH unrelated to hepatitis-B virus (HBV).

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To determine the role of hepatitis-A virus (HAV) in the etiology of post-transfusion hepatitis (PTH).
    • To investigate the presence of antibodies to hepatitis-A antigen (anti-HA) in patients with PTH.

    Main Methods:

    • Quantitative immune adherence haemagglutination assay was used.
    • Pre-transfusion and convalescent serum samples from 32 patients were tested for anti-HA.
    • Antibody titers were measured to assess immune response.

    Main Results:

    Related Experiment Videos

    • 12 out of 32 patients showed no detectable anti-HA.
    • 20 out of 32 patients had pre-existing anti-HA with no significant change in titer during convalescence.
    • These findings indicate no correlation between HAV and the studied cases of PTH.

    Conclusions:

    • Hepatitis-A virus (HAV) is excluded as the causative agent for these specific cases of post-transfusion hepatitis.
    • The study supports the existence of unidentified "non-A, non-B" hepatitis viruses responsible for PTH.
    • Further research is warranted to identify the agents responsible for non-A, non-B hepatitis.
