    Background:

    • Hematological malignancies like lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma are serious diseases.
    • Understanding potential transmission routes is crucial for public health.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To define contact patterns among patients with lymphoma, leukemia, and myeloma.
    • To compare contact frequencies between patients and matched controls.

    Main Methods:

    • Survey conducted in two rural New South Wales areas.
    • Identified 184 cases from cancer registries and local medical records.
    • Interviewed 145 patients and an equal number of matched controls.

    Main Results:

    • 38.3% of surveyed individuals reported contact with others.
    • Contact patterns among patients did not significantly differ from expected values.
    • No statistically significant difference in contact numbers, closeness, or duration was found between patients.

    Conclusions:

    • The study found no evidence supporting patient-to-patient transmission of these hematological malignancies.
    • Contact patterns among patients were similar to those of controls.
    • Results do not support the hypothesis of disease spread through social networks in the surveyed areas.
