    Area of Science:

    • Dentistry
    • Oral Pathology
    • Developmental Biology

    Background:

    • Dentinogenesis imperfecta (DI) is a rare inherited dentinal developmental abnormality.
    • Dens in dente, a developmental anomaly where enamel grows inward into the tooth, can complicate dental treatment.
    • This study investigates a unique co-occurrence of these conditions.

    Observation:

    • Microscopic and micro-analytical examination of an uncommon DI case.
    • Detailed analysis of dentin structure, including sparse, irregular tubules and numerous canals in the coronal portion.
    • Observation of large, parallel canals in the radicular portion, thinner cementum, and an enlarged Tomes granular layer.

    Findings:

    • Identified numerous cellular inclusions and canals within the dentin of the affected tooth.
    • Described a dens in dente located in the radicular portion, featuring enamel, dentin, and cementum components.
    • Characterized abnormal cementum thickness and an increased amount of Tomes granular layer.

    Implications:

    • Highlights the complex structural variations possible in dentinogenesis imperfecta.
    • Provides insights into the morphology of co-occurring dentinogenesis imperfecta and dens in dente.
    • Contributes to understanding rare dental developmental anomalies and their microscopic features.
