    Summary

    Image quality, measured by noise-equivalent quanta (NEQ), minimally impacts dentists' ability to locate endodontic file tips. Reducing radiation exposure may have little effect on precision, as observer variability is greater than image quality effects.

    Background:

    • Image quality in radiography is determined by contrast, resolution, and noise.
    • The noise-equivalent number of quanta (NEQ) per unit area quantifies the information capacity of an X-ray system.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the effect of image quality, specifically NEQ, on dentists' radiographic performance in locating endodontic file tips.
    • To compare the impact of varying NEQ levels and observer differences on the precision of distance measurements in root canals.

    Main Methods:

    • Three different speed films with a fixed screen were used to achieve a range of NEQ values (0.64 x 10^4 to 14.3 x 10^4 per mm^2).
    • Dentists' ability to read the position of an endodontic file in a root canal was assessed.
    • Components of variance in locating the tooth apex and file tip were analyzed based on NEQ and observer.
