    Summary

    Maladjusted children show lower levels of essential fatty acid (EFA) precursors for prostaglandin (PG) formation compared to normal children. This suggests a potential link between EFA metabolism and hyperactivity in children.

    Background:

    • Hyperactivity in children has been hypothesized to stem from essential fatty acid (EFA) deficiencies.
    • Such deficiencies may impair prostaglandin (PG) formation, impacting neurological function.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To investigate red blood cell EFA levels in maladjusted versus normal children.
    • To determine if specific EFA precursors for prostaglandin synthesis differ between these groups.

    Main Methods:

    • EFA levels in red blood cells were measured in 23 maladjusted children and 20 normal children.
    • Statistical analysis, including multivariate analysis, was employed to compare EFA levels.

    Main Results:

    • No significant differences were found in individual EFA levels between the groups.
    • Multivariate analysis revealed significantly lower levels of EFA series 2 prostaglandin precursors in maladjusted children (P = 0.0001).

    Conclusions:

    • Despite normal individual EFA levels, maladjusted children exhibit a specific deficit in precursors for important signaling molecules.
    • This finding supports the hypothesis linking essential fatty acid metabolism, specifically prostaglandin precursor levels, to maladaptive behaviors in children.
