    Summary

Orthognathic surgery can decrease mandibular function, particularly maxillomandibular opening. Post-surgical rehabilitation is crucial for restoring normal jaw movement and function.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Orthodontics
    • Reconstructive Surgery

    Background:

    • Orthognathic surgery aims to correct dentofacial deformities.
    • Mandibular function assessment is critical post-surgery.
    • Limited data exists on long-term mandibular function after complex osteotomies.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate mandibular function, including range of motion, after orthognathic surgery.
    • To compare post-surgical function with a control group.
    • To identify factors influencing mandibular hypomobility.

    Main Methods:

    • Retrospective study of 40 patients undergoing orthognathic surgery.
    • Measurement of maximum maxillomandibular opening, protrusion, and lateral excursions.
    • Comparison with a control group of age-matched individuals.

    Main Results:

    • Majority of patients showed decreased maxillomandibular opening compared to controls (54.8 mm).
    • Greatest reduction in opening observed after bilateral sagittal split ramus osteotomies (35.1 mm).
    • Hypomobility may stem from muscle or temporomandibular joint dysfunction.

    Conclusions:

    • Orthognathic surgery can lead to significant mandibular hypomobility.
    • Preoperative assessment and systematic postoperative rehabilitation are recommended.
    • Rehabilitation should focus on muscle function, condylar movement, and range of motion.
