    Summary

    Levodopa treatment for Parkinson's disease significantly improves quality of life and extends lifespan. Early treatment with levodopa is beneficial, with no evidence that delaying therapy offers future advantages.

    Background:

    • Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder.
    • Levodopa is a primary treatment for Parkinson's disease symptoms.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To evaluate the long-term effects of levodopa treatment on Parkinson's disease progression.
    • To compare outcomes in patients treated before and after the introduction of levodopa.

    Main Methods:

    • Parallel statistical comparison of two patient cohorts.
    • Analysis of disease duration, disability, mortality, and treatment side effects.

    Main Results:

    • Levodopa-treated patients experienced longer disease duration with less disability and death.
    • Increased duration of levodopa treatment correlated with higher prevalence of peak-dose dyskinesias, but benefits generally outweighed risks.
    • Patients treated with levodopa lived 4.5 years longer than untreated patients, with mortality rates similar to the general population.
