Factors predicting caries risk in children.

    Summary

Identifying children at high risk for cavities remains challenging. The previous year's decayed, missing, or filled teeth (DMF-index) is the most reliable predictor of future caries risk in children.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral health research
    • Pediatric dentistry
    • Dental epidemiology

    Background:

    • Accurate selection of children susceptible to dental caries is difficult.
    • Understanding the interrelations of known caries correlates is crucial for risk assessment.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To analyze the correlates of dental caries and their interrelations in 7th-grade students.
    • To identify reliable predictors for determining caries-risk groups in children.

    Main Methods:

    • Data collected via mail survey, clinical registers, and saliva tests from 153 13-year-olds.
    • Bivariate correlation analysis performed on caries determinants.
    • Discriminant and multiple regression analyses used to rank predictors of caries risk.

    Main Results:

    • Previous year's DMF-index (r=0.69) and D-index (r=0.59) were strong bivariate correlates.
    • DMF-index in girls and sweet consumption in boys were significant discriminators.
    • Multiple regression models identified DMF-index and lactobacillus count (girls), and DMF-index and sweet consumption (boys) as key predictors.

    Conclusions:

    • Developing a highly reliable method for identifying caries-risk groups using these variables is challenging.
    • The previous year's DMF-index emerges as the most reliable single predictor for assessing caries risk in children.
