Head position for transcranial temporomandibular joint radiographs

Proper angulation is important for clear transcranial TMJ radiographs. Because of individual anatomic variations, it is essential that a variable head positioner device be used. Variations in the vertical and horizontal angulation of the x-ray beam will affect the relative position of the TMJ, the petrous line, and the posterior clinoid process (Fig. 11). If other anatomic structures are superimposed on the condyle and fossa, interpretation of normal or pathologic anatomy may not be possible.
