    Summary

    Children with complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) have smaller teeth dimensions in both jaws compared to controls. Maxillary teeth near the cleft were smaller than their counterparts, suggesting tissue deficiency in cleft development.

    Background:

    • Complete unilateral cleft lip and palate (CUCLP) is a common congenital condition affecting facial structures.
    • Understanding dental anomalies associated with CUCLP is crucial for treatment planning and predicting outcomes.

    Purpose of the Study:

    • To compare deciduous tooth dimensions between children with CUCLP and noncleft controls.
    • To investigate potential correlations between tooth size and the presence of a cleft.

    Main Methods:

    • Mesiodistal and faciolingual dimensions of deciduous teeth were measured in 40 CUCLP subjects and 42 controls.
    • Measurements focused on maxillary teeth adjacent to the cleft and compared them to contralateral teeth (antimeres).

    • The findings support the hypothesis that tissue deficiency plays a role in the development of cleft lip and palate.
    • These dental findings have implications for understanding the etiology and managing the dental consequences of CUCLP.
