    Summary

Mandibular fractures treated with osteosynthesis plates showed satisfactory results even with delayed application. This study suggests the traditional 8-hour limit for mandibular surgery may be flexible in select cases.

    Area of Science:

    • Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery
    • Trauma Surgery

    Context:

    • Review of 52 mandible fractures over two years.
    • Sixteen cases utilized osteosynthesis plate fixation.

    Purpose:

    • To evaluate the efficacy of osteosynthesis plate fixation for mandibular fractures.
    • To assess outcomes in cases with delayed treatment.

    Summary:

    • Average delay to plate application was 3.5 days (range: 8 hours to 14 days).
    • Overall satisfactory results were achieved despite treatment delays.
    • Poor outcomes occurred in only 3 patients, with specific complicating factors in two.

    Impact:

    • Challenges the conventional 8-hour time limit for effective mandibular osteosynthesis.
    • Highlights the possibility of successful delayed surgical intervention in specific mandibular fracture cases.
